Book Bags

One of my many quests this summer was to find the perfect book bag for Read to Self during Reader's Workshop. Thanks to the help of a colleague on Proteacher, I came upon black bags at this site. They were affordable and a good size for our books in class. My students keep about 8 books in their book bags after each book selection. These bags have worked well for both picture books and chapter books.

To hang the bags,
I used these hooks and they held up well initially. That is, until the two weeks of insane humidity we had in early September. Once that weather was over however, I was able to hang up more hooks and they have lasted nicely so far. They are strong enough for us to hang multiple bags, in fact.

We also keep our headphones for Listen to Reading in these bags. I found if the students hook the headphones on the bag as shown in this picture, with the wire inside, they will stay in good shape.

The name tags are canvas keychains that I painted with fabric paint over vacation. I write the students' names with Sharpie.

  1. your book bags are awesome! i use cardboard magazine files for book boxes with my Daily 3, but they are a MESS after just half the year! literally packing tape is the only thing holding some of them together!
i will have to consider this idea for next year...

  2. I saw your post on book bags and wonder if you still use these. I looked on the website you gave but cannot decide what bag you used. Could you let me know which one you ordered. I would like to try these for next year, if you think they are a good idea.

  3. I just use reusable bags that you can buy at the grocery store now. They're each a dollar. I use Wegmans bags but I know another teacher who found $1 bags at Staples that she used. Mine lasted all through the year and I will be reusing them this year. Awesome!

  4. I have used the Target recyclable bags and they donated them to my school! I paid nothing for them! They hold a lot of books and last more than one year.
