New Word Detectives book {printable}

This is an oldie-but-goodie that has made such a big difference in my class. The original idea came from the wonderful Mrs. Patton over at Patton's Patch, and she graciously let me share a similar format last year.

We used Word Detectives as a word collection tool last year (you can read more about it in Word Detectives Part I and Part II).

It became such a hit with my students that I knew I wanted to take it even further this year.

So, as I mentioned last week, we are using Word Wizards (just a fun new name for my looping students so I don't get too boring!) and we are using it for our differentiated spelling lists and word collection (you can read more by clicking on the green link above). This has been very popular with the students already--I will be sharing more about that soon! :)

Back to Word Detectives! Last year, I shared some smaller-sized books that were like a half-page big. I wanted to share another option, in case you would prefer a full-page book for your students. Plus, like I've said, I've been a teeny bit frame-obsessed this summer! Is it bad to admit that I made this cover while I was away on vacation this summer?! Separation from my Mac is hard!

The cover can be seen above...

And the inside pages look like this:

The top line is for the focus of the week (such as -ing) and the examples are the words found by the students in their reading during the week.

I can't believe how something so simple (and pretty quick routine-wise) has helped my class so much! I look forward to sharing more about our Word Wizards this week.

In the meantime...how is everything going for you so far?? I would love to hear how your year has been!

  1. Kristen! My students love to be word wizards! Are you planning on offering your word wizard sign so I can hang it on our chart?
