Happy weekend friends! I want to thank you for the thoughtful comments you left on my previous post, when I introduced my classes' CRAFT Board--I couldn't stop smiling all week!I had some requests to place the CRAFT Board in my shop, but I knew I couldn't do this since it was totally inspired by Gail Boushey and Joan Moser's CAFE (as many of you know).
Plus I was pretty sure this wasn't allowed!
I was actually more excited at the thought of sharing them with everyone, because you all left such kind comments last weekend! My only concern was I had used several design elements and I wasn't sure if terms of use allowed for this file to be shared. So, after some emailing around, I was delighted to learn I could share the signs!! All of the artists were so sweet about allowing their work to be part of a freebie. And the sisters wrote me a lovely reply and gave me the okay to share this version of CAFE! I was pretty starstruck by their email!!
So, I am wicked excited to share the following file...
This 14 page PDF includes CRAFT Headers (with two different options for the T...Text Features or Text Elements), as well as matching lined paper to write each strategy on.
AND! Because I love all of my sweet readers so much...
I made a separate Powerpoint file of the coordinating lined paper, so you can type your strategies write over the lines. I know it's supposed to be in the kids' writing, but that is my major Type-A flaw--I can't help it!!! Plus, it does save some time. :)
Before I link up the files, I do want to give credit to all of the parties who let me share this file...

I LOVE these! They are beautiful. I am going to switch out my current CAFE header and start using these after Spring Break. Thank you SO much!

I'M SO EXCITED!!! You have no idea. I am going from a 2-5 ESL teacher this year to a K-5 next year, so I contemplated doing away with the CAFE strategies that have helped my older EL's so much this year. UNTIL I saw your post the other day. I immediately got excited about using the strategies (plus some) again. And NOW you are giving us the resources to set it up. I mean, Christmas, you've got nothing on today.
ReplyDeleteThank you for everything you do!

Thanks so much Kristen!
ReplyDeleteI have already shared this with my principal and co-workers. I'm looping and so excited to use this spin to keep things fresh. This is a great way to add on to the lesson/goals we have already been working on all year long. My kiddos love D5 time and I have created a family of kids who LOVE to read. Since you and I love our black backgrounds this is going to be an easy/perfect transition for my decor as well. I'm also helping to run a D5 book study and I just can't wait to show them at our next gathering.
Do you plan to share your mini lesson/goal cards per heading? I noticed you used a couple in your last post that I hadn't seen before/thought of. I would love to peek and see if some are usable for my little ones. :) Maybe you already have this in the works too. (I have to admit I feel a little greedy!)
Again, THANKS for all you do!!
And SISTERS!! (Gail and Joan) If you're reading this, THANKS for granting permission and being so very supportive of all us little people!! Thanks to you two I don't close my doors and do what's right. I keep the door open and shout it down the hallway!! :)

When I first read the CAFE book I couldn't start it soon enough. Then the curriculum started to change to match the common core and I didn't know how to fit it in. Because of your beautiful display, I have to find a way to make it fit! This will be part of my summer project! You ROCK!! Thanks for making these and posting them for us :o)

ps: I noticed I was off your blog roll--I know you were having all those problems...maybe I'll make it back on--I promise I'll behave :o)

Thrills in Third Grade
Thank you so much for this! I will be starting this after spring break and love how it fits so much better with my fourth graders than CAFE. I've been trying to tweak it for weeks and then you posted your version. I am soo excited to use it. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThanks for offering this creative re-make of the CAFE board. I definitely see the benefit in modifying it to fit the needs of older readers and writers. I believe politicians have a lot to learn from teachers or teachers should become politicians....national and world problems solved by listening, caring, and sharing. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much for sharing! I can't wait to use this for next year!
ReplyDeleteKristen, I love these. I especially love how they letters are round. It is just so visually appealing. The paper is genius. LOVE it!

ReplyDeleteI feel like using this CRAFT board is a great way to now extent my students thinking about what good readers do! We've had the CAFE board up all year and this will just make it a bit fresh. It will stretch my students just the perfect amount.
You are decorating rooms around the world. (I am in Thailand, too!) I love your designs.
How did you create these? Any chance of seeing a tutorial on how you create your lovely work? You definitely have design talent! Oh, and I linked your tutorial page to mine... I hope that is okay. Check it out and let me know if not. :-)

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI'm a bilingual teacher and am wondering if you could email me the Word Document of the headers, so I could change them to Spanish? I would be glad to send them back to you translated as well.
My email is abigailfehr@gmail.com
Thanks!
Abigail
Awesome job! I always thought that CAFE needed more to include and this is it! THANKS!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I did the FACE of a Reader this year, but I will do Reader's CRAFT next year because it seems a little more grown up for second graders. :) Thank you for the freebies and going to all the trouble to ask around about sharing! I'm so glad you did!

ReplyDeleteThis is awesome!! I agree with Stphanie, any way you could make a matching header of an E for those of us who don't have the school literacy program flexibility to switch to CRAFT from CAFE but LOVE your wonderful printables?? I love your idea of adding reader response, though! I wish I could change my CAFE board to this! Thanks for sharing your great ideas!
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!!! I am a first grade teacher and I LOVE these headings! Great idea! I love your designs!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to share your blog with teachers this summer! I just downloaded your file. Thank you for sharing! Theresa
ReplyDeleteI love the added response to literature and the text features...I would like to add the vocabulary piece and was wondering how you coordinated the graphics.
ReplyDeleteI am in love with CRAFT! Brilliant idea--can't wait to use next year!
ReplyDeleteI love the craft idea, but the CRAFT letters printed really weird, off on the bottom. Could you possibly email me the file so I can try printing it that way? THanks. Laurie

Hi Laurie, I think you need a recent Adobe Reader to view them nicely--it's a free download. Thanks for visiting!!! :)
DeleteI have one word - Perfect. Love the Respond to reading and text features. Would you please tell us the font you used. Also, would love to see the strategies you listed below your craft sign. Thanks so much.

ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING!!! I'm alreay thinking about the next school year and how I'm going to use CRAFT instead of CAFE. I shared it with the other teachers at my school and they loved it also. So much that we're going to change CAFE to CRAFT. Could you please share the stategies/stategy cards you used under these headings or let me know what resources you used? THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!

Oh my goodness, I adore this!! Thanks to you for designing and all the others for allowing to give for free. I am going to be teaching first grade this coming year and will definitely be using the daily 5 cafe. Would you be willing to send the "e" to me?
ReplyDeletetrishjlandis@gmail.com. Love your blog and cannot wait to read all your past posts hee, hee :). Thanks so much!!
Kristen,
ReplyDeleteThese are fantastic but of course you know that by now. :) Thank you so much for sharing your talents. I love the addition of responding to text, but would love to know what else you put under there besides "use because" and "use quotation marks". Any additional info you've got would be much appreciated! After all, it's not like you've done enough for us already. ;)
I just printed these out to prepare for the upcoming school year! I can't wait to see them on my wall. :)
ReplyDeleteTo echo what many others have said, I hope you are planning a post to share some of your ideas for underneath the headers...
Thanks again for sharing!
Thanks so much! So smart!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! I live the changes you made to CAFE. So clever!
ReplyDeleteI love your craft board!!! I was wondering where you go the list of strategies for each of your letters from. Thanks for creating and sharing this resource :)
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing! I can't wait to use them! I think they fit the older grades much better than the standard CAFE board.
ReplyDeleteI.LOVE.THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for being so sweet and sharing these with us!
ReplyDeleteI loved the idea of CRAFT especially for the older kids. I will be using it in my classroom this year. However, I wanted to create a one page handout for my kids to put in their binder with the CRAFT heading and the skills underneath it. I am not at all creative. I was wondering if you could possibly post a document with the cute CRAFT headings so I can create the handout.
ReplyDeleteGreat job! Just wondering what exactly do you use under the other headers? Can you share?
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!
Wonderful change for the upper grades.
ReplyDeleteCould you post the strategy headings for R (response to text) and T (text elements)? In the CAFE book it list the mini lessons for each CAFE and I was hoping you'd share what you used for the R and T.
Thank you so much for sharing! What a clean and easy-to-read board. I absolutely love it and I was starting to try and replicate it from a picture I saw when I came across your downloads. Bless you!
ReplyDeleteA BIG HUGE THank you for sharing!!!!
ReplyDeleteKristen, I sent both the CRAFT headers and the VOICES headers to Staples Printing Services. I'm thrilled with the way they came out. They look SO GOOD!!! Thank you for sharing your brilliant ideas! :)

ReplyDeleteThank you, thank, thank you! I just moved to a new school and grade, and this will be my weekend project to refresh my Daily Five board for my fifth graders. You are so kind to do this!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing - I've seen many version of this and yours is by far the best! I am having the same trouble as another poster...when I try to type on the lines, the lines move. Can you offer any help??
ReplyDeleteWonderful !!! Wonderful !!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for helping me get excited again for the upcoming year. I am interested too in the strategies for R and T.....many happy thoughts go your way! Enjoy your summer break:)
These and the writing VOICES are just amazing! I was wondering what font you used so for the headers so I can match the print on my strategies for underneath!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone!! I'm so sorry to have kept you waiting. I feel absolutely terrible about it and have been trying to finish up the strategies as quickly as possible. CRAFT had such a late start in our classroom and I've been spending time getting the rest of the strategies ready over the summer, looking at our curriculum and doing some professional reading. Thanks so much for your patience! I will be posting them soon!
ReplyDeleteI am loving the Text elements but I think vocabulary is very important and hate to not talk about it. I was wondering if you could make me a sign changing the R to Recognizes and expands vocabulary?
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer! I'm sorry, I honestly can't keep up with the requests for adaptations to the board so I won't be able to do that. I really wish I could help out--I'm so sorry!!
DeleteWhat about adding a Y? Make it CRAFTY! Your Expanded Vocabulary...Just thinking...
DeleteLove these! After Christmas break I am changing my CAFE menu!!
Thank you so much :)
I love this board! I am a new teacher and frantically trying to get my classroom put together. Is there any way I can purchase the header definitions/strategies (ie-Comprehension-I understand what I read, etc.). I am a big fan of your work and am loving putting my classroom together with the help of your ideas and experience!
ReplyDeleteHi TristyLou...I have a new board and strategies for Response to Text and Text Elements in a new post here: http://www.ladybugsteacherfiles.com/2012/08/updated-craft-board-with-strategies.html
DeleteBest of luck with your new position!
Thanks for your patience and understanding! I've uploaded some strategies and new headers here: http://www.ladybugsteacherfiles.com/2012/08/updated-craft-board-with-strategies.html
ReplyDelete:)
I downloaded the CRAFT and CAFE headings, but for some reason the CAF from CAFE are missing from the file- can you please let me know where I can find them? Thanks!!!!
ReplyDeleteYou will need the latest version of Adobe Reader (it's free) to see the file correctly. The CAFE Headers are mixed in with CRAFT board so there's just an extra E with that file.
DeleteWhy do you feel the need to get permission to create this from "The Sisters"? They did not create "fluency" or "comprehension". Found a creative way to organize reading strategies, YES, but this is your version of representing reading strategies and it is well done!! I do not feel like you need permission to do anything based on what you have done.
ReplyDeleteI love everything, but my school wants me to use the original CAFE materials to be consistent with everyone else. I can't find the "E" and the "Expanding Vocabulary" headers. I have printed everything else out, but can you help me with the "E"?
ReplyDeleteHi Yanique, thanks! There are some CAFE headers here: http://www.ladybugsteacherfiles.com/2012/04/more-craft-cafe-headers.html
DeleteHi Kristen,
ReplyDeleteI love your headings and would love to use them in my classroom. However, I'm a bilingual teacher. Would you be willing to send me the word document, so I can translate them and then I would send them back to you to post on your site?
Thanks so much!
